It seems ever hungry for synergies and not content with rebadged Chryslers, Alfa are seeking yet more tie-ups with other manufacturers. They have signed a a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding for the development and manufacturing of the new Alfa Romeo spider based on Mazda’s next-gen MX-5.
Under the loose agreement Mazda and Alfa Romeo will share the rear-wheel drive platform of the next-gen MX-5 due in 2014 model. But styling and engines will be unique providing each their own identity.
The agreement is just an understanding at present while the details of the partnership are worked through, but both are said to be targeting a binding agreement later this year. This may also be the start of wider co-operation in an industry seeking ever greater tie-ins and Mazda have access to Fords parts bins.
Fiat's CEO Sergio Marchionne was quoted as saying “This agreement clearly demonstrates our commitment to Alfa Romeo and the determination to grow it into a truly global brand. By partnering with Mazda, we will be co-operating with the recognized leader in compact rear-drive vehicle architectures in order to deliver an exciting and stylish roadster in the Alfa Romeo tradition.”
Mazda boss Takashi Yamanouchi further added “Establishing technology and product development alliances is one of Mazda’s corporate objectives and this announcement with Fiat is an important first step in that direction.”
Seems At least the Alfa Romeo 4C gets the exotic tie up with Maserati in Modena. The new spider will be built in slightly less luxury at the Japanese automaker’s plant in Hiroshima, Japan from 2015.
